North Mountain Outfitters Adds Cowboy Fun to Family Outings
Adding the excitement of a horseback ride to a day in the mountains can’t be beat, and North Mountain Outfitters strives for what personal guide Dwight Wood calls “… family outings giving individuals a cowboy taste that you just can’t get anywhere else without going out west.” Half day, full day, and overnight trips are available for individuals 10 years and older (unless child has previous riding experience). The horses are hand-picked and sure-footed, and the trails cover a variety of terrain full of ridges, streams, and valleys. Each ride offers unique opportunities for observing wildlife and nature’s finery. Reservations are a must, so call ahead giving Dwight plenty of time to plan an exciting family adventure.

Humpback Rocks Combines Hiking, History and Scenic Mountain Views
History is never far from Virginia’s many attractions, and families can mix a little hiking with history at Humpback Rocks Farm located at the first stop south on the Blue Ridge Parkway, milepost 5.8. A collection of authentic 19th century mountain farm buildings that were relocated to the scenic spot is accessible from a farm trail. The representation of rural mountain life is open and manned during the summer months by costumed interpreters demonstrating crafts and skills of the times. A visitor’s center offers exhibits detailing the history of mountain life. A short, easy trail detailing the natural aspects of the area is at milepost 6.0, and for older children and adults with hiking experience, a challenging trek up Humpback Mountain, provides breathtaking views and access to the Appalachian Trail.
